Waste And Contaminants
Exploring waste streams and environmental contaminants to drive sustainable solutions.
Testimonials
Over the years, our research questions have shifted in different directions but waste, utilization of waste streams, and how this utilization relates to environmental contaminants, have always been at the core.
It all started by investigating the formation mechanism of polychlorinated contaminants during incineration of municipal solid waste, subsequently branching out into research topics encompassing thermal treatment of other wastes and residual biomass.
For some years, our research focus has mostly been on production of char materials from waste fractions, and their applications as adsorbents for removing contaminants from water. Special focus for these projects has been the removal of emerging contaminants as pharmaceuticals from waste waters in global south. The waste-derived char has been produced by a number of different techniques, both dry as pyrolysis and torrefaction, and wet as Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC).
The rise of PFAS as an environmental contaminant had shifted the focus back towards the municipal solid waste, and the fate of PFAS in the waste to energy process.
Albeit the shifting focus, waste streams and their interaction with contaminants have always been the focus. Please explore our different research topics on their separate pages.
